How Women for Change is responding to the G20 Shutdown
Description
In South Africa, 15 women die every day from femicide—one every two and a half hours. Women for Change is leading a powerful national movement to demand that gender-based violence be declared a national disaster. Operations and Advocacy Coordinator Merlize Jogiat joins us to discuss tomorrow’s nationwide shutdown, highlighting the impact of violence on women, families, and the economy. With over a million petition signatures, the movement is gaining unstoppable momentum.
On November 21st, women across the country will wear black, lie down in public spaces at noon, and refrain from both paid and unpaid work. A 15-minute livestream will honour approximately 400 femicide victims, reminding the nation of lives lost while action remains overdue.
This conversation underscores the urgent need for change. Whether you’re directly affected or wish to show solidarity, the shutdown is a crucial opportunity to raise your voice. Join the movement, wear black, and demand action now.
