Have you ever gone through a point in your life where you felt and believed your life was worthless and nothing you did mattered? It can be a hard sensation to shake, especially when your life appears to be drifting and not really going anywhere. You can’t quite find your purpose - your meaning.
When you’re at school, and you thought about what you wanted to do when you left school, you might have had an idea or no clue at all; and that’s okay because you don’t really know who you are or what you’re about. But once you left school and added a few years to your life, you can begin to question what life’s all about.
But when you ask this question, you then ask yourself,
Where am I going in life? What’s my purpose? And where do I belong?
If we can’t answer these fundamental life questions, then we begin to doubt that there’s a point to our very existence. It’s where the comparisons kick in, and we look at people we know and what they’ve achieved. We start holding a bright judgmental torch to our life, and now everything is in the spotlight.
And even if we have done well and reached goals and dreams, sometimes we still feel that we have little value and struggle to find our place, that corner of life, shaped just for us.
You know, those who have experienced depression have a tendency to develop a deep sense of worthlessness and a lack of direction. These are the beliefs I want to focus on today.
The first thing to understand is…
No-one can give you value. No-one can make you feel valued - I mean really valued.
What I’m getting at here is even when you know, really know that you are loved, without a sense of direction and self-worth, that love you know almost means nothing.
For example; How many people do you know or can you think of that are not very popular, and yet, they thrive? They have this unshakeable self-belief and confidence in themselves and their abilities. It’s almost as though the scorn they feel from others fuel them.
I have known people like this, and they laugh it off. Not on a surface level but a “I-don’t-care-what-you-think-I know-I’m good”, kinda level. They just refuse to entertain self-doubt.
People like that never feel a sense of worthlessness. The thought and feeling doesn’t even enter their mind. They understand that their value comes from how they view themselves. If they believe they have worth, then they act worthy, and their confidence grows.
But if you say you’re worthless, you walk, tall and act worthless. You may even dress in a way which reflects that inner belief. Then what happens is life reflects that back to you and affirms your view. People treat you with less courtesy, care, love and respect.
So, you must give yourself value. You must show others you value yourself.
But how do you restore your self-worth and value
I want to bring you back to the six basic human needs, but what I want to do is bring your attention to the primary two needs. Growth and Contribution. Because if you meet these two fundamental human needs, by default you’ll start nurturing the other four. Particularly significance and connection.
Take a good look at your life, take a good look at your life and answer these questions.
What am I contributing to humanity? Who am I serving other than myself?
Before I go any further, I do believe there is the need to put your wellbeing and health first in everythi...
