From 2000-2002 the market lost more than 35%. From 2007-2009 the market lost more than 52%. January 2018 the Dow peaked just above 26,600, then fell 10%. October 2018 the Dow peaked again, just above 26,800, and by Christmas Eve had lost more than 18%. By the end of April 2019, the Dow was back up close to all-time highs, above 26,650, and then lost close to 7% through May. Yet we hear "the market always goes up." But, it doesn't.
