IBM unveils quantum computing advancements, aiming for quantum advantage by 2026 and fault tolerance by 2029. The new Nighthawk processor, with 120 qubits, is a significant step towards practical quantum computers. Despite progress, quantum computers are not yet capable of breaking Bitcoins encryption. IBM partners with organizations to create an open-source platform for tracking progress and improves quantum software, Qiskit. Plans include expanding Qiskit with new features for machine learning and optimization by 2027, and advancing the experimental Quantum Loon processor for fault-tolerant quantum computing.
