Description

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking a new contract for its detention center near Tacoma, Washington, which currently holds up to 1,575 people. The new deal calls for 1,635 spots and would switch to lower national detention standards, downgrading from performance-based rules. Immigrant advocates are upset about the downgrade, citing concerns about use of force, medical care, water quality, and outdoor recreation. The facilitys poor track record includes days without fresh air and complaints about bad-tasting water. The contract starts March 28th for at least one year, with options up to five.
