Grabbing our passports and heading to Chile for lunch with Intimate Stranger this Monday – recorded at the legendary Bar Loreto in Recoleta, Chile in 2017.
It’s been a while since I last posted anything by Intimate Stranger. They’ve grown a lot since I first discovered them via MySpace around 2007 (or 2008). At the time they were just getting their feet wet, playing gigs all around Santiago, building up a reputation and a following – posting what would be songs from their first album on MySpace and grabbing attention just by the sheer fact they were in the midst of doing something interesting – they were representing a growing Indie community and they were dying to get their message across around the world.
It’s taken a while, but the dedication and perseverance have been worth it. In the interim they’ve been playing SXSW in Austin – doing gigs all over Europe (lead singer co-founder Tess Spoljarek-Woodgate is from Eastern Europe but landed in Chile, marrying Lead guitarist/co-founder Lautauro Vera and forming Intimate Stranger) and releasing seven albums.
To say they’ve grown by leaps and bounds is an understatement – they are finally getting an international reputation. They are known in America but primarily from the College Radio/Underground/Streaming community (the only one that really matters anyway), but it’s enough to keep them busy.
While I’m looking for more recent sessions and concerts, I ran across this one from 2017 – a live gig from Bar Loreto in Recoleta Chile on July 23, 2017.
I always stress the fact that music is universal and it encompasses many styles and cultures – for a long time Rock bands from other countries were politely ignored by America because of the language barrier. That’s no longer the issue – what is the issue is the continuous flood of new music from all over the world to discover; not merely what’s homegrown. Now local artists have Europe to contend with – and in this case, South America which for a long time was completely ignored and left to fend for itself. It appears to have worked because there are a lot of artists who have taken their cue from the goings on in Spain, France, Germany and the UK.
Since the advent of Streaming and the great advances in sound quality – access to all this music is so much easier and discovering it is only a matter of hitting “browse” and diving in.
Hopefully, pressing “Play” and giving an hour and thirteen minutes of your time may yield handsome results, if you are so inclined.
Listen – do yourself a favor and go exploring – you have a lot more in common with the rest of the world than you think.
If you haven’t already, here’s a good place to start.
