Daily Reading: Romans 5:1-21
Still Waters
Being
very well know, Psalm 23 paints the picture of the Shepherd taking
his sheep to a the still waters. The picture given, is a picture of
peace. God takes us to a place of peace where we can rest and take
from the “Living Water” who restores our soul from the chaos and
parched desert which surrounds us. Paul recounts the basis for this
peace in Romans 5:1. Through Jesus Christ, we are reconciled and
accepted by God. We are free from wrath and fear; you and I are
pleasing to God. All this for the purpose found in today’s verse,
that we may “exult in hope of the glory of God”. Another
way to say this phrase is that we ‘have peace with God… and we
exult (rejoice) in hope (certainty) of the glory (greatness) of God”.
You can almost picture the sheep looking over to their shepherd as
they sip water, thankful and rejoicing that He brought them to this
place. They have absolute certainty in Him, His leading and His Word.
We Exult
The
second part of verse one and the second part of verse two are
dependent upon one another grammatically. The idea that constant
peace carries over in to continual exultation in hope. Yet, Paul
placed in between these two phrases the ever so powerful words, “we
have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace by which we
stand”. Not only is our justification glorious, but the method
of justification is as well! All these give reason for us to glory
in God. After all, our justification did not come by works or
man’s religious ceremonies. Our justification came through Christ
alone with man completely removed from the process save to exercise
faith. Some translations have even suggest the words “by faith”
are not present in the original texts, but added in to clarify that
this is no work of any man. Our response to Christ’s work is
simply, to not work, but instead believe with absolute certainty!
Meditate
on the results of our justification. The person who is justified…
- Stands in God’s presence (Hebrews 10:19 )
- Stands before God – saved (1 Peter 3:18 )
- Stands in favor of God (Ephesians 3:12 )
- Stands in the privileges of God (Ephesians 2:18 )
- Stands in the promises of God (John 10:9)
These
truths are the basis for every believer’s salvation. No person is
greater than another. Each man, woman and child who has humbled
themselves before God and accepted His free gift of salvation by
faith alone stands in these promises.
Are
we living, teaching, sharing and trusting God that these are true in
our lives? Do you see yourself as accepted before God? Declare
this tremendous truth out loud: “God is pleased with me
because of Christ”!
