Hi listeners, my name is David Cot and I’m the host of this podcast, The History of Spain Podcast. You see, I’m a Spaniard and I started this podcast because I was astounded to see how there was no history podcast on the history of a country that has been so influential in world history. So here I am, in a journey to learn and tell you the history of Spain in a chronological order, from Prehistory to the transition to democracy. It’s important to note that I’m not a historian, but that doesn’t mean that my sources for the episodes will be Wikipedia, YouTube videos and maybe one book. No, I check every fact and interpretation from multiple academic books of reputable historians, to make the podcast truly informative.

There are hundreds of history podcasts for different audiences, some are generalists, others give a unique perspective, or are entertaining and funny. This is an informative and chronological podcast focused on Spanish history, including the history of the Spanish colonies until their independence and Portugal up to their Restoration War of 1640. Nonetheless, this podcast is not focused solely on the political and military history of Spain, as I will provide insights about the different societies, cultures, religions, economies, and even more specific aspects such as sexuality or slice-of-life details. Each episode will last between 25 and 40 minutes, and there’s a section at the end of every episode called The Verdict, where I give my reflections, thoughts or rhetorical questions about something related to the episode. About the regularity of the episodes, the show is biweekly, or fortnightly as it’s said in some English-speaking countries, so expect one episode every two weeks. By the way, I do my best to avoid mistakes such as mispronunciations, but sometimes it happens, especially in the firsts episodes, and I know that my Spanish accent might be difficult to understand for some listeners, so I apologize in advance for that and hope that it’s not an impediment to learn the history of Spain with me.

To talk more in detail about the content, the second episode is focused on the geography of Spain and Portugal, to understand how the environment affected Spanish history, and I must warn you that I’m covering Prehistory and Roman Hispania in a very concise manner. I cover the Prehistory and Protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula in just three episodes, including the mysterious Tartessos and the Phoenician and Greek colonies. As for the history of Roman Spain, I cover the Roman conquest in two episodes and the Romanization and Christianization of Hispania in another two, since if you are more interested in Roman history there are fantastic podcasts on the subject. After that though, I explain the history of Spain more in depth. The Barbarian invasions, disintegration of the Western Roman Empire, and Visigothic Kingdom are covered in 10 episodes, and afterwards I can go much more in depth because there’s more information.

This introductory first episode is an updated version of the original, and I’ve to mention that I’ve opened a Patreon page, patreon.com/thehistoryofspain, and I’ve introduced ads, because you cannot imagine the terrible amount of time that a well-researched history podcast needs. The podcast also has a website, thehistoryofspain.com, and it has been updated to be more mobile responsive and to include an online store, where you can buy books on the history of Spain, travel guides and cookbooks of the Hispanic world, classics of Spanish literature, books to learn Spanish, or even merchandising like T-shirts or pillows. Moreover, at thehistoryofspain.com you can find the scripts of the episodes and sources that I used, you can donate there if you don’t want to become a patron, and you can subscribe to the newsletter of the podcast.

Finally, as for where you can find the podcast, it’s on all the major directories, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher and Acast, and it’s even on YouTube but don’t expect an actual animated video. If you want to, you can also download the episodes directly from the website or the Blubrry directory. Finally, I highly recommend you to subscribe to the podcast to not miss an episode and follow the social media accounts of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, where I post daily stuff. And please, you don’t have to, but consider spreading the word about the podcast and website, leaving a review, and becoming a patron. I hope you enjoyed the episode and thank you for listening!
