Description

Is a jackal a dog or a fox? Biologically speaking, jackals are members of the Canidae family, the same group that includes domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, and coyotes. But when we ask whether a jackal is a dog or a fox, we're really asking how it fits into this canine family tree. Here's the short answer: jackals are not foxes, and they're not domestic dogs either. They are more closely related to wolves and domestic dogs than to foxes, but they occupy their own unique place within the Canis genus. That's right—scientifically, jackals belong to the same genus as dogs and wolves, which makes them closer kin to your household pet than to a fox. Foxes, on the other hand, belong to a different genus known as Vulpes.
