After independence, Nehru became the virtual director of India’s foreign policy. Under his guidance India became the first state to have pursued a policy that was new in the history of international relations- the policy of Non-alignment. He was supported by Naser of Egypt, Sukarno of Indonesia and Joseph Broz Tito of Yugoslavia. His policies of non-alignment and Panchscheel—principles of peaceful coexistence—guided India’s international relations until the outbreak of the Sino-Indian War in 1962, which contributed to his declining health and subsequent death in 1964, ending his 17-years in office.
