When Followers Get Jealous of God’s Plan

In John 3:22 –26, we witness a pivotal moment of tension between John the Baptist’s disciples and Jesus' growing ministry. John had faithfully prepared the way, baptizing in the wilderness and calling Israel to repentance. Yet now, Jesus’ ministry was flourishing, and more people were going to Him. John’s disciples, concerned and even jealous, came to him with a complaint: “Rabbi, that man… is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

This passage addresses the ongoing struggles with pride, comparison, and ministry rivalry that persist today. John’s disciples were focused on numbers and recognition, worried that Jesus was overshadowing their leader. But John himself would later clarify that his joy was to see Christ exalted, not himself. This timeless truth reminds us that all faithful ministry ultimately points to Jesus, not to personal status or popularity.

In today’s podcast, we explore what this conflict reveals about human nature, the dangers of jealousy in serving God, and the freedom that comes when we embrace our calling with humility. Just as John understood that he must decrease so Christ could increase, we too are called to let go of pride and rejoice in God’s greater plan, even when it doesn’t put us in the spotlight.
