Judge allows ‘digital IDs’ for voting in North Carolina

A North Carolina judge has ruled that digital identification will be accepted for voting in the state’s upcoming elections. The decision came after a request from state and national Republicans to block the use of digital IDs was declined.
Wake County Superior Court Judge Keith Gregory stated that it was too late to issue a temporary restraining order, which would have prevented the use of digital IDs for voters.
North Carolina law requires voters to present identification, including driver’s licenses and student ID cards, when voting in person. While the State Board of Elections had previously said digital forms of identification were not allowed, the board later approved the use of digital IDs for students and employees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August.
Republicans argued the law only allowed physical cards, not digital ones.
The ruling is part of an ongoing case and can still be appealed.
