Justice Department Faces Challenges in Prosecuting Protesters
Update: 2025-12-18
Description
The Justice Departments efforts to prosecute protesters accused of assaulting federal officers have faced significant challenges. Despite Attorney General Pam Bondis pledge for severe consequences, a review by The Associated Press found that many initial felony charges were reduced or dismissed. The governments aggressive charging and rhetoric, including labeling defendants as domestic terrorists, often didnt hold up in court. In many cases, officers suffered minor injuries, weakening felony assault charges. The Justice Department even lost all five misdemeanor trials they pursued, including the case of Sean Charles Dunn, who was acquitted after throwing a sandwich at a Border Patrol agent. More than fifty cases are still pending, but none have gone to trial yet.
