PAIA, the Promotion of Access to Information Act, is a South African law (Act 2 of 2000) that gives effect to the constitutional right of access to information held by public and private bodies. It empowers individuals to request information held by the state or other persons when needed to exercise or protect their rights. The Act also mandates that public and private bodies create and provide access to PAIA manuals, which detail the types of records they hold and the procedures for requesting information.
