What We Discuss In This Episode:
Dee shares her passion for working with women in this season of life. She shares her own journey of hormone issues since age 17. She started to learn about hormones through her infertility journey and began connecting things like food, stress, environmental factors, and even the products that we put on our body and never even thought about. And then the second stage of her hormone health journey was post-kids. She was always a very petite fit, worked out – even enjoyed exercise – but noticed she had a really hard time losing weight, being 50 pounds heavier than her usual weight.
Hormonal changes are a natural cycle of life. Women's hormones decline as we age, and it's important to understand how we can support our body. We also need to remember our hormones are still doing something even past menopause.
Dee shares how it’s important to note that your hormones are, what she calls, the electrical panel. They are signals of other dysfunctions in your body. Your hormones control your brain, your nervous system, your thyroid, your adrenals, your reproductive system, your metabolism, as well as insulin. And when we get to perimenopause and menopause, and our hormones start to decline, it affects women on a lot of levels. Many women experience brain fog, and they have more fatigue, because their body just doesn't have that hormone-vital reserve to combat all of the stressors.
We discuss weight during this phase of life. This is a huge piece in the hormone menopausal phase. Dee believes the body wants to release weight, but stress is a big factor keeping that from happening. Also, it may be surprising to know that most women aren't eating enough food, so their body will store more fat, and then you become insulin resistant. So, watching your food intake and making sure you're having enough protein is important.
Dee also discusses the importance of strength training. That doesn’t mean hours at the gym and having to engage in CrossFit. We can use resistance bands or even practice yoga or Pilates. There are so many ways to build muscle.
Dee then discusses the importance of cortisol. We become chronically fatigued, have those afternoon crashes, or we're not sleeping well because we're actually not producing that cortisol anymore - and then we can go into adrenal fatigue.
Dee also talks about managing your stress. You don't have to take 30 or 60 minutes of time to manage your stress. Dee gives us some quick tips on things that we can do so we can help manage our stress.
Dee gives us a few tips in closing to help us thrive in menopause and midlife.
1. Physical: Regulate and get your blood sugar under control. Blood sugar isn’t just eating candy and cookies and things, there's a lot involved
2. Vitality: Preventative health. Don’t ignore your own intuition.
3. Advocate: It's okay to be an advocate for your health. It's okay to seek support in different areas that maybe you haven't checked out before
