Constitutional Symptoms

la fatiga (fatigue)
la fiebre (fever)
los sudores nocturnos (night sweats)
la pérdida de peso (weight loss)
el aumento de peso (weight gain)
los ganglios inflamados (swollen/inflamed lymph nodes)
los escalofríos (chills)

Ask questions using the verb TENER

Do you have a fever?

OJO: We do NOT say, “Tiene una feibre,” but instead, “Tiene fiebre.”

¿Tiene escalofríos?
Do you have chills

¿Tiene dolor?
Are you in pain?

¿Tiene los ganglios inflamados?
Are your lymph nodes swollen/inflamed?

¿Tiene los pies hinchados?
Are your feet swollen?

¿Tiene la cara hinchada?
Is your face swollen?

¿Ha tenido fiebre?
Have you had a fever?

¿Ha tenido sudores nocturnos?
Have you had night sweats?

¿Ha tenido aumento de peso?
Have you had weight gain?

¿Ha tenido pérdida de peso?
Have you had weight loss?

OJO: You may hear your patients use the following construction to speak about having problems in a certain area of their body. Padecer/Sufrir de + la parte del cuerpo.

Padezco del estómago.
I have stomach problems.

Mi abuela sufre de las rodillas.
My grandmother has bad knees.

Ask about recent symptoms

Ask about weight loss and weight gain

Have you lost weight recently?

Have you gained weight recently?

¿Cuánto ha bajado de peso?
How much weight have you lost?

¿Cuánto ha subido de peso?
How much weight have you gained?

¿Desde cuándo?
Since when?

OJO: Use “¿Desde cuándo?” to ask how long a symptom has been going on.
Por ejemplo: Paciente: Tengo los pies hinchados. >> Enfermero: ¿Desde cuándo?
