Lebanon warns of security vacuum as UN peacekeepers near 2027 withdrawal
Update: 2025-12-11
Description
The United Nations says Israeli soldiers have fired at peacekeepers on patrol in southern Lebanon. No one was injured in the attack. The peacekeepers say the Israeli military was informed in advance of the time and location of their patrol. The UN has been working with the Lebanese army to support a year-old ceasefire aimed at ending fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanese authorities say they're worried about what will happen when UN peacekeepers leave the southern border with Israel. In June 2000, the United Nations established the Blue Line, a 120-kilometer withdrawal line. This was to confirm the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces after 22 years of military occupation in southern Lebanon. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Naqoura, southern Lebanon.
