Legendary African Samurai of Feudal Japan - Yasuke
Description
Welcome to Sleepytime History — true stories from the pages of history for a full night's rest.
Tonight we journey to sixteenth-century Japan for the remarkable true story of Yasuke: Legendary African Samurai of Feudal Japan. Once enslaved, Yasuke travelled across continents in the service of Jesuit missionaries, from Africa through India and beyond, before setting foot in the bustling city of Kyoto. There, towering above the crowds, he astonished onlookers who had never seen a man like him before. Some thought his dark skin was painted with ink until it was revealed that this was his natural complexion. The Jesuits valued him as a loyal companion and protector, but his destiny changed forever when word of his presence reached Oda Nobunaga, the most ruthless and powerful warlord of his time.
Nobunaga was a leader who defied tradition. He welcomed foreign weapons, new ideas, and men of ability regardless of their origins. When he met Yasuke, he recognised qualities of loyalty, courage, and strength — qualities he rewarded by bestowing the noble title of samurai. Yasuke was elevated into the warrior class, granted armour and a sword, and rose into the inner circle of Nobunaga’s household. He moved through the splendour of Azuchi Castle, stood guard at councils of war, and fought in campaigns across the provinces. From celebrated samurai at the side of his lord, he became part of Japan’s turbulent struggle for unity.
But his life was not without peril. Yasuke was present during the betrayal at Honnō-ji, when Nobunaga’s general Akechi Mitsuhide turned against him. As fire consumed the temple, Yasuke defended his master, only to be captured when the household fell. From there, his fate becomes a mystery. Some believe he returned to the Jesuits, others that he vanished into obscurity. What remains certain is that his story endures — a tale of resilience and belonging that still captures the imagination centuries later.
