Lehrmann Loses Appeal, Rape Likely Established
Update: 2025-12-03
Description
Bruce Lehrmanns appeal against a defamation ruling, which found him likely guilty of raping Brittany Higgins, has been dismissed. The Full Court of the Federal Court upheld the original finding from April 2024, determining that Higgins claims of rape inside Parliament House in 2019 were established. Lehrmann had sued Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson for defamation over an interview with Higgins. The appeal judges rejected arguments that the definition of rape used by the original judge was inconsistent with an ordinary persons understanding and dismissed claims that Lehrmann would be entitled to significant damages if his appeal succeeded. This loss could mean Lehrmann may be required to pay two million dollars in damages to Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson.
