God revealed Himself as the "I AM." That name by which God actually revealed Himself to the nation Israel as the God who becomes whatever your need might be."You don't have to worry whether or not you have your shield, Abraham. I am thy shield. I am your defense. I will protect you. We also face the same fear, doubt and insecurities in life that Abram did. We have to make daily choices to trust in God or ourselves. God gives Abram a promise and a vision in a dream. This is a prophecy, which is a promise of future events, and then it happens.
Abram gets tired trying to complete this covenant. It is a picture to us that we cannot be perfect in our own strength. Just like he gave us the Ten Commandments to show us we cannot keep them and we need a redeemer.
