Liberia parliament factions head to Supreme Court - November 25, 2024
Update: 2024-11-25
Description
Both sides in the ongoing dispute in Liberia’s divided House of Representatives are expected to appear before the Supreme Court tomorrow Tuesday. One group of lawmakers, claiming to be the majority, elected a new speaker last week to replace current Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The group has accused Koffa of alleged conflicts of interest. They claim his law firm represents some government agencies while he is still the Speaker. The Supreme Court issued a stay order last Friday for the majority to halt all actions and return to the status quo pending further court action. Eugene JM Kollie, a member of the minority bloc which supports Speaker Koffa, tells VOA’s James Butty, the group welcomes the court’s intervention.
