It was an absolute honor speaking with Dr. Daniel Kopans, a pioneer in the field of breast imaging, about the importance of breast cancer screening for women in their 40s. Dr. Kopans has dedicated his career to improving mammography technology and has become one of the most outspoken defenders for breast cancer screening in young women.

In this conversation, we discuss how 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟰𝟬 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. (and why 50 is a made up number). He also breaks down myths over radiation risk, overdiagnosis, and the future breast imaging. 

Dr. Kopans helped create the breast imaging subspecialty in the 1970s and is the founder of the Breast Imaging Division. Massachusetts General Hospital. Amongst his many accolades, he helped invent digital breast tomosynthesis, the needle localization procedure which made breast conservation therapy possible, and also wrote the book on breast imaging.
