Manifest Destiny was the 19th-century belief that the United States was divinely ordained to expand its territory across the North American continent to the Pacific Ocean. Coined by editor John O'Sullivan in 1845, this ideology promoted westward expansion and was used to justify territorial acquisitions, such as the annexation of Texas and the Mexican Cession after the Mexican-American War. However, it also fueled the forced displacement of Native American communities, intensified debates over slavery, and contributed to sectional tensions that led to the Civil War.
