Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray, a fugitive from the Missouri State Penitentiary, was arrested in London and extradited to the U.S. Ray pleaded guilty in 1969 to avoid the death penalty but later recanted, claiming he was a scapegoat. Ray maintained until his death that he did not fire the fatal shot and that he was part of a larger plot he didn’t fully understand. Some believe he was manipulated or set up by intelligence agencies or organized crime.
