Mary Moriarty served as chief public defender of the largest county here in Minnesota from 2014 to 2020, where she oversaw 38,000 cases per year and 120 public defenders. Before that, she served as a public defender for the county for 25 years. Mary is a passionate activist and has garnered much deserved praise for not only her tenure as chief public defender but as an outspoken advocate for systemic reform.
Mary is a well-respected voice on issues of criminal justice reform. She’s been featured on CNN, MPR, MSNBC, USA Today, and The Today Show to name a few.
