Manage Your Mind Mindful Moment - Stay Out of Their Thought Bubble
Description
Today we’re diving into a thought error that causes so many of us unnecessary stress and suffering: mind reading.
On the one hand, being able to pick up on social cues is an important life skill. None of us wants to be that person who completely misses when someone is trying to wrap up a conversation or isn’t in the mood to hear about our dog because they’ve just lost theirs. But there’s a fine line between reading cues and sliding into mind reading — and that’s where things get messy.
Mind reading happens when we assume we know what someone else is thinking or feeling, and we treat those assumptions as fact. Most of the time, these assumptions are negative, inaccurate, and a direct cause of anxiety or conflict. In contrast, reading social cues means simply noticing what’s observable — body language, tone of voice, or context — and leaving room for curiosity and other explanations.
In this episode, I’ll share my favourite “thought bubble” analogy for spotting when we’ve wandered into someone else’s head and started making up stories. I’ll also talk about my own experiences (like with my husband when he needs processing time) and how easy it is to climb into someone’s thought bubble and stir up trouble that was never there.
You’ll learn:
- The difference between healthy cue-reading and harmful mind reading
- Why mind reading fuels unnecessary anxiety and conflict
- How my “thought bubble” analogy can help you catch yourself before you spiral
- A simple thought-challenging exercise you can use when you feel stuck in assumptions
- How staying in your own bubble gives you clarity, control, and a lot more peace
The first step is awareness: noticing when you’ve crept into someone else’s thought bubble. Once you catch it, you get to choose to step out — and protect yourself from unnecessary stress.
Tune in to learn how to stay in your own bubble (and out of everyone else’s).
