Mandela Children’s Hospital blackout raises red flags over power debt and failed backup systems
Description
Bongani Bingwa speaks to Isaac Mangena, City Power spokesperson, about the alarming blackout at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in November 2025 , a facility treating some of the country’s most vulnerable patients. The outage, triggered by an alleged R41.5-million debt owed to City Power, came just over a year after a separate June 2024 interruption caused by a cable fault. This time, however, the hospital’s backup generators failed to kick in, raising urgent questions about contingency planning, financial governance, and the operational resilience of critical health infrastructure.
