Fruth Pharmacy, a 73-year-old family-owned regional pharmacy chain in West Virginia and Ohio, has been acquired by Walgreens Boots Alliance, with transfer of prescription files and inventory from 16 stores planned for December 3 — the deal underscores how legacy community pharmacies are increasingly consolidating to survive pressure from reimbursement and PBM models.

At UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the Postgraduate Year One Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program is celebrating 25 years, having trained 163 residents who serve in community pharmacies across North Carolina. With 95 % of Americans living within five miles of a pharmacy, the program emphasizes the critical role of community pharmacists in rural and underserved areas.

A new commentary from Those Nerdy Girls draws attention to the growing crisis of “pharmacy deserts” — areas lacking accessible pharmacies — and links closures of independent and chain pharmacies (nearly 1 in 3 since 2010) with inequities in care for rural, Black and Latino-majority neighborhoods.
