Meta bought 1 GW of solar this week
Update: 2025-10-31
Description
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has made a significant commitment to renewable energy by signing three major deals to secure nearly one gigawatt of solar power. This brings their total solar energy purchases to over three gigawatts this year alone. The deals include a 385-megawatt project in Louisiana and a 600-megawatt solar farm outside of Lubbock, Texas. While the Texas farm won't directly power Meta's data centers, it will help balance out their energy usage. The Louisiana projects involve purchasing environmental attribute certificates, which allow companies to claim their power comes from renewables. However, some experts question whether these certificates truly encourage more renewable energy, urging tech giants like Meta to invest in new solar and wind projects to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence.
