Migrants, markets and mayors
Description
A considerable proportion of the population in Africa is engaged in rural-urban migration, with 60% of the urban population residing in smaller towns and cities that are also experiencing rapid growth. This phenomenon gives rise to a number of questions pertaining to urban planning and policy.
What are the consequences of the influx of domestic migrants into these types of urban centers? What are the characteristics of the migrants?
Luc Christiaensen and Nancy Lozano-Gracia, two experts from The World Bank, will present some answers in this episode. They are the co-authors of Migrants, Markets and Mayors: Rising above the Employment Challenge in Africa's Secondary Cities, a book published in English and French in Africa Development Forum, a series co-published by The World Bank and the French Development Agency.
