Matthew 26:57-27:23

Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7; 96:9,13

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*

let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving*

and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,*

and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth,*

and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,*

and his hands have molded the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down,*

and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God,*

and we are the people of his pasture

and the sheep of his hand.

Today, if you hear his voice,*

do not harden your heart as in the rebellion.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;*

let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

For he comes, for he comes to judge the earth*

and with righteousness to judge the world

and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 143

1  Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my cry for mercy; *

in your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness.

2  Enter not into judgment with your servant, *

for no one living is righteous before you.

3  For the enemy has pursued my soul;

he has crushed my life to the ground; *

he has made me to dwell in dark places

like those long dead.

4  So my spirit grows faint within me; *

my heart within me is desolate.

5  I remember the days of old;

I meditate on all you have done; *

I ponder the work of your hands.

6  I stretch out my hands to you; *

my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.

7  Answer me quickly, O LORD; *

my spirit fails.

7  Hide not your face from me, *

lest I become like those who go down to the pit.

8  Let the morning bring me word of your steadfast love, *

for I put my trust in you.

8  Show me the way I should go, *

for to you I lift up my soul.

9  Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies *

for I flee to you for refuge.

10  Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. *

Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

11  For the sake of your name, O LORD, preserve my life; *

in your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

12  In your steadfast love, silence my enemies; *

destroy all the adversaries of my soul,

for I am your servant. †

Composite

After the Psalm, the Officiant begins

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

Song of Solomon 1–2:7

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.

  Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
  For your love is better than wine;
    your anointing oils are fragrant;
  your name is oil poured out;
    therefore virgins love you.
  Draw me after you; let us run.
