Revelation 1

Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7; 96:9,13

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*

let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving*

and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,*

and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth,*

and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,*

and his hands have molded the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down,*

and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God,*

and we are the people of his pasture

and the sheep of his hand.

Today, if you hear his voice,*

do not harden your heart as in the rebellion.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;*

let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

For he comes, for he comes to judge the earth*

and with righteousness to judge the world

and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 47

1  Clap your hands, all you peoples. *

Shout to God with a voice of triumph.

2  For the LORD Most High is to be feared, *

a great king over all the earth.

3  He subdued peoples under us, *

and the nations under our feet.

4  He shall choose our inheritance for us, *

the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

5  God has gone up with a shout, *

the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6  Sing praises to God, sing praises. *

Sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7  For God is King of all the earth; *

sing praises with understanding.

8  God reigns over the nations; *

God sits on his holy throne.

9  The princes of the people gather together, *

the people of the God of Abraham.

9  For the shields of the earth belong to God; *

he is highly exalted. †

Composite

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

Genesis 4–5:2

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must rule over it.”

Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Beh
