In this episode, I am joined by geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Amani Michael to explore the process of aging from an Eastern Christian (i.e. Orthodox) point of view. Dr. Amani proposes that aging is a process of involuntary asceticism -- that is to say, the austere lifestyle that many holy men and women in the Orthodox Church have taken up in order to detach from worldly lives. Through this discussion, we hope to achieve a better understanding of elderly care, assisted living, and what we can learn from those who enter into an ascetic lifestyle through the process of aging.
