Music Diplomacy in Utah and Abroad
Description
In this episode of "Diplomacy in Action," Kory Yueh, a Community Education Fellow for Utah Global Diplomacy, speaks with Gerald Elias, a man of many talents: an accomplished author and a distinguished musician. They discuss how music can serve as a powerful tool for diplomacy and cultural exchange. Elias draws on his personal experiences, from his time with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra during its historic visit to China in 1979 to his own international travels.
The conversation explores how music can foster understanding on a human level, transcending political and economic barriers. Elias shares his insights on how symphony orchestras serve as "melting pots" for diverse cultures and how these artistic exchanges build lasting international friendships. He also touches on the importance of nurturing the next generation of musicians and his role as the music director for the upcoming Vivaldi by Candlelight concert in Utah.
