Incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim democratic socialist, made history by taking his oath of office on a centuries-old Quran at a closed subway station under New York City Hall. He used two special Qurans, including a pocket-sized version from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, which mirrors his own background as a South Asian-born Ugandan with a wife of American-Syrian roots. Despite Islamophobic backlash, Mamdani stands firm in embracing his faith openly.
