Description

The Kiribati government has hit back at claims it snubbed New Zealand's Foreign Minister, saying it was actually the Kiwis who cancelled a meeting between Winston Peters and the country's president. Mr Peters said New Zealand can no longer commit to ongoing monetary aid to Kiribati after three cancelled or postponed visits in recent months. The New Zealand aid programme is worth over $100 million, but increasingly, Kiribati has been receiving money from China after ditching its diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 2019.
