Newport County 1-3 Gillingham: Record broken at Rodney Parade!
Description
Gareth Ainsworth’s Gillingham rewrote the club’s record books at the weekend, as they came from one goal down to win 3-1 away at Newport County.
The Gills fell behind in the opening 30 seconds, and Glenn Morris had to save an eighth-minute spot-kick as the team found themselves under the cosh in the opening minutes at Rodney Parade. But a stirring fightback in the first half with two goals from Bradley Dack (the second from the penalty spot), and an early contender for Gills’ Goal of the Season from Jonny Smith saw the Gills transform their fortunes to go in at halftime 3-1 up.
The team held firm in the second half, and could even have added to their lead, but in the end, they kept their shape and their professionalism to ensure they ran out 3-1 winners.
It meant the Gills extended their current undefeated streak to 21 league games to set a new all-time club record, and on this episode of The ME7 Podcast, Tom Jasper and Emlyn Timmons look back at that victory, and discuss the club’s remarkable run of form under Ainsworth.
