Mushaf’taki sıralamada 4, iniş sırasına göre 93. sûre olan Nisâ sûresi, Medine döneminde inmiş olup 176 âyettir. “Nisâ” kelimesi, kadınlar demektir. Sûre, özellikle kadın haklarından, onların hukûkî ve sosyal konumlarından bahsettiği için bu adı almıştır. Sûrenin, hicretten sonra 5 veya 6. yılda Müreysî Gazvesi’nde indiği bilinen teyemmüm âyetini ihtiva etmesi, ağırlıklı olarak bu yıllarda indiğini düşündürmektedir.
