Officially Welcome Arizona & Arizona State to the Big 12: The Best Conference in America
Description
According to sources from CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd, Arizona is currently engaged in serious discussions about leaving the Pac-12 conference and joining the Big 12. After days of deliberations, the Wildcats appear to be strongly leaning towards the Big 12 as their future conference, which has been their home since 1978.
The Arizona Board of Regents, responsible for overseeing both Arizona and Arizona State, is holding an executive session on Thursday night to discuss "possible legal advice and discussion regarding university athletics." It is presumed that the main topic of the discussion will be conference affiliation.
Despite the discussions, there is a considerable sentiment within both athletic departments that a separation between Arizona and Arizona State is not desired and is unlikely to happen. One high-ranking source mentioned that it would be extremely surprising if the Wildcats left their Sun Devil rivals behind in the Pac-12.
Power brokers at both schools, including key members of the Board of Regents, prefer to maintain the unique UA-ASU rivalry and partnership and do not want to see a split. The question remains whether the Big 12 would be willing to expand to 16 members by bringing in Utah along with Arizona.
