Description

Helen Farmer speaks to Chasity O’Connell from Human Relations Institute and Clinics about the seemingly connected but different issues of shyness, introversion and social anxiety.

Psychologically, introversion is a personality trait which may or may not involve shyness, which is an emotion. Social anxiety is psychological disorder that can have a huge impact on people’s lives and can include panic attacks, depression, low self-esteem and extreme feelings of fear.

Some researchers estimate extroverts make up 50 to 74 percent of the population. The other 16 to 50 percent of the population consists of introverts. Although people may tend towards introversion or extraversion, approximations suggest around 38 percent of people are ambiverts, displaying both qualities of introversion and extraversion.
