CONSECRATE

Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

Jesus, I belong to you.

I lift up my heart to you.

I set my mind on you.

I fix my eyes on you.

I offer my body to you as a living sacrifice.

Jesus, we belong to you.

Praying in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.

HEAR

Luke 4:17 –21 ESV

And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

    because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

CONSIDER

There are so many things I love about today’s text and would like to discuss.

For starters, behold this riveting, vivid scene of Jesus reading the Bible in church—and of all things, a lectionary text. He unrolls the scroll to the prescribed text of the day: Isaiah 61.

And I love this text. I’m linking it here so you can go and read the whole chapter. It is the very essence of the third leg of the awakening stool: Consecration. Transformation. And #3, Demonstration. This is a picture of what awakening looks like: Light dispelling darkness; life destroying death; love overwhelming lostness; beauty for ashes; joy for mourning; praise for despair; and on it goes.

And notice from whence it all comes—the Holy Spirit. Jesus emptied himself of all his God-like qualities and became a humble human being, just like us. He was filled with the same Holy Spirit who fills us in order to show us just what is possible when a human being is filled with the Holy Spirit. As we gift our lives to Jesus (which is consecration), he gifts us with the Holy Spirit—who remakes us into the very image of God who is Jesus (which is transformation). Then he moves in and through us to activate and actualize his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven (which is demonstration).

This is the whole point of Jesus: to show us what it looks like when the Holy Spirit has complete domain in a humble human being. It begins with our being born again by the Holy Spirit when we receive his sacrificial death for our sins and rise up into the power of his resurrection life. We call this work justification, which I call the first half of the gospel. Then we enter into what I call the second half of the gospel, which the Bible calls sanctification. Sanctification is the process of being filled to the measure of all the fullness of God by the person of the Holy Spirit and learning to walk in love—becoming an agent of God’s powerful transforming presence in the lives of others.

In the spirit of Gospelling, I’m going to list a series of verses from Luke’s Gospel so far, which show you all the movements and explicit mentions of the Holy Spirit (in case you missed it). It’s pretty stunning. You’ll have to see the email to get this little bonus feature today.

Finally, though, I want to share my most favorite part of today’s text. It is the little word in the last word of the last sentence from our reading. Here’s the last bit. Let’s see if you can guess the word.

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

What’s your guess?

Today!

This little word was my inspiration to write the Sower’s Creed some years ago. In case you missed it, it’s in our Gospels companion journal. I’ll drop it in as the text for our prayer today. And if you would like to download it at no charge see today’s P.S.

And the last time I checked, it’s still Today!

BONUS HOLY SPIRIT STUDY OF LUKE’S GOSPEL SO FAR:

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” (1:35 )

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. (1:41 )

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. (2:26 –27)

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (3:16 )

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (3:21 –22)

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. (4:1–2)

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. (4:14 –15)

PRAY

Today,

I sow for a great awakening.

Today,

I stake everything on the promise of the Word of God.

I depend entirely on the power of the Holy Spirit.

I have the same mind in me that was in Christ Jesus.

Because Jesus is good news and Jesus is in me,

I am good news.

Today,

I will sow the extravagance of the gospel

everywhere I go and into everyone I meet.

Today,

I will love others as Jesus has loved me.

Today,

I will remember that the tiniest seeds become the tallest trees; that the seeds of today become the shade of tomorrow; that the faith of right now becomes the future of the everlasting kingdom.

Today,

I sow for a great awakening.

JOURNAL

What is your favorite feature from today’s Scripture text? What draws your attention and excitement from the whole of Isaiah 61. Are you still living into and out of our word from a few days back, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

SING

Today, we will sing “Spirit of the Living God” (hymn 299) and “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” (hymn 361) from our Seedbed hymnal, Our Great Redeemer’s Praise.

For the Awakening,
