OpenAI Faces $207B Funding Gap by 2030
Update: 2025-11-26
Description
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is grappling with significant financial hurdles despite its immense popularity. According to a new report from HSBC, OpenAI may not be profitable by 2030 due to the colossal costs of running and expanding its AI operations, particularly the need for substantial computing power. The company is projected to need at least another $207 billion for computing infrastructure by 2030 to meet the demand of nearly half of the worlds adult population using its services. OpenAIs CEO, Sam Altman, expressed frustration about balancing these needs with a profitable business model. The company aims for 36 gigawatts of AI compute power by 2030, enough to power a state roughly the size of Florida. Despite projected revenues growing rapidly to over $213 billion in 2030, HSBC projects that OpenAIs cumulative free cash flow will still be negative, leaving a $207 billion funding gap.
