This sermon preached by St. John Henry Newman on Nov. 9, 1853, in St. Chad’s cathedral on the occasion of the first Diocesan Synod of Birmingham was later published in “Sermons Preached on Various Occasions.”
In it St. John Henry Newman describes how the unity of the Church is most fully manifest in a diocesan synod, and how Christians should always act in unity with their diocesan bishop.
