Organ Transplantation and the Gap between Supply and Demand
Update: 2013-02-26
Description
While the advances in science and medicine have made organ transplantation a widely used and effective treatment option for various conditions, there is a significant gap between the high demand for organs and the limited supply of organ donations. Different countries and regions in the world have followed different strategies to close this gap: Spain, for example, has achieved the highest rates of organ donation by improving organization and introducing an opt-out model ("Widerspruchslösung"), the Scandinavian countries have focused on living organ donation, others have permitted organ donation after cardiac death in addition to donation after brain death. Experts from different countries will briefly present their experiences and join in a discussion with each other and the auditorium about the best way to close the gap of organ transplantation. | Center for Advanced Studies: 26.02.2013 | Speakers: Beatriz Dominguez-Gil, Bernadette Haase-Kromwijk, Thomas Mone, Per Frithjof Pfeffer | Moderation: Thomas Breidenbach, Ralf Jox
