Origin Energy Sued for Overcharging Customers
Update: 2025-12-22
Description
Australias energy watchdog, the Australian Energy Regulator, is suing Origin Energy for allegedly overcharging customers by $2.5 million. The case involves 3,400 customers who were billed through their Centrepay accounts even after closing them and paying what they owed. This happened over more than five years, with 77,000 separate breaches. Origin knew about the glitches in their payment system but paused a fix that could have stopped the overcharges. Many of those affected were already struggling financially. Origin has apologized and worked to refund the money, but the legal battle heads to Federal Court against four of Origins subsidiaries for breaking national energy rules.
