His first six years was on a farm in a remote part of the Conway River in North Canterbury, 6 miles from the nearest road. The closest town Cheviot. At age 6, the family moved to Domett. From the day he started school, Doug faced challenges which put him in good stead for the remarkable life that has ensued over the past 80 years.
