If you find a plastic bottle stuck between the tire (BrE tyre) and fender of your car, it might be a sign of trouble.

When a driver begins to move, the bottle will make unpleasant noise.

The first instinct is to jump out of the car and  walk around it to find out what is happening.

And that is exactly  thieves lurking nearby are waiting for.

It is  a perfect opportunity for them to snatch your personal stuff and even drive off in your car.

fender: a guard over the wheel of a car.
to lurk: to wait in a secret way.
to drive off: to go away in a car.
