I think there’s a really pernicious ecology of fear that is sustained by the public, the media, political discourse, and the immigration system itself that labels people in particular ways. So you can’t pinpoint exactly where the fears or hostilities start, but all of this talk and all of these reactions reinforce one another to create a really distrustful and hostile climate for refugees, asylum-seekers, and immigrants to come into and find themselves living within.
