Description

„Roughly two-thirds of what's exported outside of German borders stays in the EU. So, I think we should keep calm, essentially, and try not to be coerced into making some concessions to the US that are not really necessary." Julian Hinz, Professor of International Economics at Bielefeld University and Director of the Trade Policy Research Centre at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, discusses possible effects of US tariffs with Johannes Trenka. Building on scientific data, he analyzes the uncertain global economic situation, paying particular attention to the German Automotive Industry, which needs to strategically reposition itself. The key, he says, is to build resilience through diversification and supply chain realignment, which applies to companies as well as governments. Unity among European countries in trade negotiations and exploration of new trading partners is crucial to enhancing their bargaining power against external pressures.  By doing so and strengthening the Capital Markets Union, Europe can not only stay competitive but also secure a more resilient and prosperous future.

This episode was recorded on June 24, 2025 – so the agreement from July 27, 2025, could not be taken into account. However, the key points regarding Europe's strategic preparations remain fully valid.
