Dr. Alan Frankel is a professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF. The Frankel Lab focuses has delivered ground-breaking research on both HIV and Covid-19. They use biochemistry, structural methods, proteomics, and virology to investigate two essential regulatory complexes in HIV. Their studies have led to an understanding of how the HIV virus has evolved adaptable protein interfaces to hijack host machines and establish a unique regulatory circuit that drives gene expression during the HIV life cycle. Dr. Frankel has Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stony Brook University. Dr. Frankel was a MIT Whitehead Institute Fellow.
